New power station on the agenda
Fri, 7 October 2011
APA Group and AGL Energy will jointly develop a 242 megawatt gas-fired power station in Mount Isa, Queensland, following the signing of a long-term agreement to supply electricity to Xstrata Mount Isa Mines through to 2030.
The Diamantina Power Station will be a combined-cycle power station consisting of two Siemens 121 megawatt (MW) combined-cycle gas-turbine units. The power station is expected to become fully operational in March 2014, with the first 121 MW unit operational in December 2013.
The power station will be supplied with gas sourced from Surat Basin CSG reserves and transported through existing gas pipeline infrastructure to Mount Isa. A new gas compressor station is to be built at Ballera to provide a second option for transfer of gas between the southwest Queensland pipeline and APA’s Carpentaria Pipeline.
Site works are planned to commence in the first quarter of 2012 with development approvals already in progress with the Mount Isa City Council.
