The program, which will require recruits to obtain a common safety training card, will initially target all new employees working on offshore drilling and production sites.
At the formal launch, APPEA Chairman Eric Streitberg said “The timing of this initiative is vital for the oil and gas sector as we anticipate over 20,000 new employees joining our industry over the next few years, many for the first time.”
The APPEA CEO Safety Leadership Group, which comprises over 80 chief executive officers across the Australian oil and gas industry, committed to this industry-wide safety initiative to address the expected growth in first time workers as part of the industry’s goal to become a global safety leader.
The program will be progressively rolled out, beginning in the offshore sector before eventually applying to onshore personnel including new workers in the coal seam gas sector in Queensland. New workers in the industry will be required to complete the course as of 6 April 2010.
