Specific government departments will be responsible for coordinating the approvals process for proponents across all agencies under the new framework designed to reduce duplication of resources and overlap across agencies.

Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett said “We need an approvals system that welcomes investment and stimulates economic development, not stymies it”. The move was welcomed by the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA).

“The establishment of a lead agency will create a single point of contact to manage approvals processes, delivering greater efficiency towards taking our projects off the drawing boards and into construction,” said APPEA Chief Executive Belinda Robinson.

Ms Robinson described the new approach as a major step forward for the gas and oil industry in Western Australia.
