Gas Today remembers: Amadeus to Darwin pipe repair

Gas Today remembers: Amadeus to Darwin pipe repair The Northern Territory’s propensity for unpredictable and extreme weather conditions can often cause issues for major projects, as in the example of the Northern Territory’s Amadeus Basin to Darwin natural gas pipeline, which was significantly damaged by earthquakes in 1988. Veteran pipe welder Laurie Atkins talks to Gas Today about working through the night so the lights didn’t go out in Darwin.

Feeding global gas demand: LNG production in the Top End and beyond

Feeding global gas demand: LNG production in the Top End and beyond A number of projects are currently in the planning and design phase for development of gas resources located offshore Northern Territory, in the Timor Sea and onshore Papua New Guinea. Gas Today provides an update on the progress of these projects and the different technologies being used to support them.

Global gas wrap

Key approval for MacKenzie Gas Project Canada’s National Energy Board has issued a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the 1,196 km Mackenzie Valley Pipeline, part of the Mackenzie Gas Project. The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline is being planned to run from the Beaufort Sea to northwestern Alberta, and is designed to carry up to 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day.

Branching out in Bass Strait

Branching out in Bass Strait Victoria is not currently attracting as much attention for its natural gas developments as many other Australian states. A very major gas project, however, is taking place just off the Victorian coast.

Gas gets going around Gippsland

Gas gets going around Gippsland Almost a year on from the final town getting connected to natural gas, Multinet Gas’ South Gippsland Natural Gas Project is bringing gas to ever more residents in the area. Gas Today spoke to project manager Jemena about the roll-out and what it means for end users.

Coal seam gas: the new Star of NSW

Coal seam gas: the new Star of NSW Eastern Star Gas has positioned itself as a key player in New South Wales’ burgeoning coal seam gas industry as operator of the one of the most advanced CSG project in the state, the Narrabri CSG Project.

Gas generating interest in NSW

Gas generating interest in NSW Gas-fired power generation in New South Wales could grow significantly in the not-too-distant future. Gas Today looks at the state’s current and potential gas generation assets.

Western Australia – an economy built on gas

Western Australia – an economy built on gas Western Australia is the nation’s largest producer and consumer of natural gas. As production rates decline in current gas fields, new developments are required to meet increasing demand from both domestic and international markets. Balancing the needs of gas producers and the state’s biggest gas consumers is an ongoing process in Western Australia.

Gas shortfall expected in WA: DomGas

Gas shortfall expected in WA: DomGas Tue, 29 June 2010 A new Economics Consulting Services report shows that Western Australian gas supplies will decline over the next decade unless action is taken by State and Federal Governments, according to the DomGas Alliance.

New Zealand unlocks new gas potential

New Zealand unlocks new gas potential In 2009, the New Zealand Government commissioned a series of expert reports to unlock the unconverted wealth of the nation’s petroleum resources. Based on the results, the Government developed an Action Plan to realise that potential, and is currently assessing feedback from industry players.

Wrapping up major gas projects in Australia

Wrapping up major gas projects in Australia Despite global financial uncertainty and the possibility of major economic reform under carbon reduction legislation, Australia’s gas industry hasn’t slowed. Katherine St Lawrence looks at some of the major projects currently under development across the country.

Boomin’ Bowen

Boomin’ Bowen Coal seam gas exploration within the Surat-Bowen Basin has increased dramatically over the last decade. This is only expected to continue with the number of proposed LNG projects which are to use the basin’s coal seam gas reserves as feedstock.

Bass Strait - delivering gas for 40 years

Bass Strait - delivering gas for 40 years Bass Strait’s Gippsland Basin gas field has delivered clean and cheap energy to Victoria for over 40 years. Today, with the demand for gas growing and with petroleum driving the state’s wealth, gas exploration and production in the area looks set to continue for years to come.

Bonaparte Basin

Bonaparte Basin The remote Bonaparte Basin is the most northerly sedimentary basin in western Australia. But as the site of the Bayu-Undan field – the key driver of the Northern Territory’s LNG boom – and a number of undeveloped fields, the basin may soon prove to be more than it seems.

Review of Taranaki Basin

Review of Taranaki Basin Over the last five years, New Zealand’s gas reserves have grown substantially, with the country having considerably more than the OECD average. This is in no small part due to the considerable exploration being done in the Taranaki Basin, which covers an area of 100,000 sq km, and includes both onshore and offshore fields.

Selling gas to New Zealand’s mass market

Selling gas to New Zealand’s mass market Currently, New Zealand homes use less than 3 per cent of all natural gas produced in the country. In an effort to respond to this, Powerco has successfully launched the GetGas campaign.

Developing the Top End’s gas industry

Developing the Top End’s gas industry The Northern Territory’s abundant gas resources have long been recognised for their potential to propel Darwin forward as a major gas hub in the Asia-Pacific region. However recent reports have demonstrated that both the offshore Timor Sea and onshore petroleum basins are relatively unexplored and offer great potential for further natural gas discoveries and development.

A hub of excitement in the Kimberley

The Western Australian Government is planning to develop a common-user LNG hub in the Kimberley region to process gas from the resource rich, offshore gas fields and reduce ‘ad-hoc’ development along the Kimberley coastline.

Browsing gas fields

Browsing gas fields Located off the northwest coast of Australia, exploration activity in the Browse Basin is sparking further excitement about Western Australia’s gas reserves and production capability.

Papuan possibilities

Papuan possibilities There has been much interest in Papua New Guinea’s vast gas reserves over the last decade, with a number of international companies proposing LNG projects in the country. Gas Today provides a snapshot of Papua New Guinea’s gas projects on the drawing board.

New Zealand - the land of the long white gas

New Zealand - the land of the long white gas Although the last major land mass to be discovered, New Zealand certainly has not been left behind when it comes to gas. With exploration surging ahead, gas-fired power generation on the rise and LNG projects on the horizon, the future of Aotearoa’s gas sector is full of promise.

Addressing the future of NZ gas

New Zealand Minister of Energy and Resources Gerry Brownlee spoke with Gas Today about the country’s gas reserves, the impact of climate change, and the future of the nation’s gas industry.
