The 627 kilometre QGP transports gas from the Surat and Cooper basins, the Denison Trough and the southern Bowen Basin to markets in Gladstone and Rockhampton.

The pipeline links the Roma to Brisbane Pipeline to the South West Queensland Pipeline at Wallumbilla, providing access to most of the gas resources in the state, including coal seam gas fields around Fairview, Spring Gully and Moura. In all, five lateral pipelines connect the main pipeline to important gas sources and markets.

The expansion of the QGP will aim to deliver additional gas to Gladstone for industry. In addition to the two new compressor stations, the project also involves two stretches of pipeline looping, which Enerflex is also involved in at the station interfaces. Through looping and additional compressors, the capacity of the pipeline will be expanded to
49 petajoules per annum.

Across all phases of the project, Enerflex will commit more than
150 employees to deliver the two Solar Taurus 60 turbine-driven centrifugal compressor stations.

The company has previously completed works on other Jemena assets, such as the Mila Compressor Station on the Eastern Gas Pipeline. The station was completed and operational within an accelerated target date.

“We demonstrated many innovations to Jemena on the Mila Compressor Station and are working closely with Jemena to optimise outcomes on the Banana and Rolleston projects,” says Alex Fox, Senior Project Manager, Enerflex Process.

Project challenges compressed

Design on the compressor stations began in August 2008, with earthworks commencing in October 2008. Enerflex has been working to a tight delivery schedule with the compressor station at Banana expected to be operational by September and Rolleston in December 2009.

This posed a challenge during the engineering phase of the project, which saw Enerflex draw on lessons learnt from its twelve years of experience in engineering, procurement and construction delivery for similar facilities. Enerflex said that standardising design as far as was practical allowed the company to fast track engineering while not compromising the integrity of the asset.

The location of the compressor works poses few challenges because of the support provided from the Enerflex’s Brisbane office. A temporary construction camp was installed at Rolleston while local amenities supported workers in Banana and Moura.
