In May 2009 SICK launched a unique ultrasonic flowmeter for flare gas measurements. The new FLOWSIC 100 FLARE offers integral cross-duct measurements for pipe diameters of up to 72 inches (1.83 metres).
All three styles – the cross-duct version, the cross-duct retractable, and the probe version – use an innovative sensor design where the ultrasonic transducer is embedded in a flow-optimised sensor shape, and all FLOWSIC 100 FLARE flowmeters are qualified for high-speed gas flow conditions up to 120 metres per second (m/s) of gas velocity. The single probe version allows easy installation with a single flange from just one side. An optional retraction mechanism means the probes can be installed and removed without stopping plant operations.
The evaluation multi control unit (MCU) processes the signal inputs and outputs, determines the reference values (standardisation) and calculates the molecular weight and mass flow.
By using a serial connection to the ultrasonic sensors, a remote installation of the control unit can be established up to 1,000 m away from the measurement location. This can save the costs of expensive installations within hazardous areas. Up to three measurement points can be handled by one MCU parallel. Complete spool-piece solutions are also available for direct installation in newly built pipelines.

SICK tests every FLOWSIC 100 FLARE under zero flow conditions for gas composition, temperature, pressure and moisture. The test ensures lowest system uncertainty and highest meter performance with an average scattering at zero point better than 0.0005 m/s.
A field test has also been developed for periodic onsite verification of the meter performance.
FLOWSIC 100 FLARE meters are also approved for use by the International Electrical Code for Explosive Zone 1 conditions.
