Natural gas was championed at the IGU Gas Event, which was held on 13 December 2009 at the Copenhagen conference and attended by more than 110 participants from the COP15 delegation, non-government organisations and other invited guests.
Speakers at the IGU event said that major reductions in carbon emissions cannot be achieved in the short and medium terms without a much stronger commitment to gas.
They advocated an increased use of gas in electricity generation and the transportation sector as effective ways to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions.
“Increased use of natural gas can take place without the huge subsidies required for renewable since we have the technology, the availability and the infrastructure,” said IGU Secretary General Norway Torstein Indrebo.

The conference resulted in the Copenhagen Accord between a limited number of developing and developed nations. The political accord aims to cap the global temperature rise by committing signatories to significant emission reductions and also requires developed nations to have written emissions target plans by 1 February 2010.
