The Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum has released petroleum acreage in the Canning Basin, northern Carnarvon Basin and Perth Basin.
There is one release area in the Canning Basin, on the Broome Platform, which has widespread hydrocarbon shows, a salt seal, notable source rock and shale gas potential, all in the Ordovician reservoir.

There are two release areas in the highly prospective offshore northern Carnarvon Basin, with established production in the vicinity. There are six release areas in the onshore northern Perth Basin, a region noted for its Permian and Jurassic oil and gas production, known shale gas and tight gas potential, and infrastructure.
