Moored 200km from Australia’s nearest shore, Shell’s FLNG facility will be 488 m long, and will be the largest floating offshore facility in the world. When fully equipped and with full storage tanks it will weigh around 600,000 t.

Shell Executive Director Upstream International Malcolm Brinded said “Our innovative FLNG technology will allow us to develop offshore gas fields that otherwise would be too costly to develop.”

FLNG carriers will have the capacity to process and transport LNG, chilling the gas to minus 162 degrees Celsius, therefore significantly shrinking the storage volume by 600 times.

Until now the liquefaction of offshore gas has always involved piping the gas to a land-based plant via pipelines.

The FLNG facility will stay permanently moored at the Prelude Gas Field for 25 years.

Curtin University and Shell Development Australia will establish a global learning centre in Western Australia, which is expected to train the world’s first FLNG operators.

The Global Centre for FLNG Learning and Research will be based on the Bentley Campus and officially launched at the end of 2011.

Shell Australia Chair Ann Pickard said “We are very happy to be setting up the Global Centre for FLNG Learning and Research, in partnership with Curtin University and training providers such as Challenger Institute, which will help train the world’s first FLNG operators right here in Perth.”

The centre will provide leadership, management and technical education specifically relevant to the FLNG industry and involve partnerships with Vocational Education and Training providers for training in LNG factory operations.
