“Transmission line” means a pipeline, other than a gathering line, that: Transports gas from a gathering line or storage facility to a gas distribution centre, storage facility, or large volume customer that is not down­stream from a gas distribution centre.

Transmission also refers to transporting gas within a storage field. Producers introduce the gas into the transmission pipelines which are used to carry the gas from the gas fields to local distribution companies.

As the natural gas travels down the pipeline it loses pressure and may require repressurising. This is carried out at compressor stations.

The gas transmission industry’s national standard, AS2885, is highly regarded by other Australian industries and internationally. It was developed by a working group from both industry and government.

The AS 2885 relates to design, construction, testing, operations and maintenance of gas and petroleum pipelines that operate at pressures in excess of 1050kpa.
