Engineering and surveying firm expands through acquisition

Engineering and surveying firm Fyfe has expanded its operations with the acquisition of Adelaide civil and structural engineering firm Trevor John and Associates.

Fyfe Managing Director Mark Dayman said the purchase, for an undisclosed sum, would significantly boost Fyfe’s overall engineering expertise and open up further opportunities in the mining and resources sectors.

“Structural engineering was the missing piece of our service offering and this acquisition fully addresses it,”? he said. “Not only will it help us expand our offering in the CSG area, where we have enjoyed rapid growth, but it will enable us to move more fully into the mining sector.

“Of particular immediate advantage for Fyfe is that Trevor John and Associates (TJA) has Registered Professional Engineers of Queensland accreditation and will be able to take over some of the services that Fyfe has subcontracted to other companies in that state in the past.

“All 15 staff members at TJA have accepted positions at Fyfe, including Trevor John, who will continue to run the business from its Glen Osmond location.”?

Mr Dayman said the TJA acquisition came on top of a rapid period of growth for Fyfe.

“Much of this growth has been associated with oil and gas and CSG projects in Queensland and northern South Australia,”? he said. “Since June last year we have taken on an additional 15 field crews in Queensland, together with vehicles, equipment and support staff, and opened a new oil and gas office in Brisbane. We have also made a number of internal changes to our business to ensure the growth remains targeted.

“In recent months, we have won work in the mining sector as well and we see this is a significant area of future growth. The acquisition of TJA is a strategic step in ensuring that happens.”?

Mr Dayman said the acquisition would increase Fyfe’s workforce to almost 400 employees in eleven offices across SA, Queensland and the Northern Territory.

TJA commenced operations in Adelaide 35 years ago and has a strong reputation in the civil and structural engineering fields. Its workforce includes qualified engineers, technicians, draftspersons and administrative personnel.

Major clients include local councils, the housing industry, industrial, commercial and institutional builders with work ranging from home and office extensions, single unit cottage work, medium density and multi-unit developments.
