Speaking to The Australian Financial Review, Mr Vega said the country needed a new pipeline to add an Australian supply-side solution to gas shortages, rather than rely on importing LNG at $10 per gigajoule.

He said the industry needed to aim for around $7 a gigajoule, contending a pipeline transporting gas from Western Australia to the east coast could achieve that price range.

Gas prices and importation have been a heated debate topic of late.

Earlier this week analyst Mark Samter proclaimed LNG import terminals must be supported to prevent gas shortages, while Federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan said onshore gas restrictions in Victoria must be abolished.
