Energy stakeholders want approval of NEG

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Energy Council needs to approve the Energy Security Board’s framework for the National Energy Guarantee (NEG), according to a group of energy stakeholders.

The collective, which includes pipeline operator Jemena as well as organisations such as the Australian Energy Council and AGL, released a statement which stated “no other options offer both better policy and more political durability” than the NEG.

The statement warned against further delaying a decision on the policy and that “a looming series of elections raises the risk that the opportunity to reach an agreement on a mechanism would be lost”.

The policy has seen much division and debate at both Federal and State government levels, with The Australian Financial Review recently reporting Opposition Leader Bill Shorten wanted all parties toreach an agreement, despite Labor’s current disagreements on some of the details.

Approval of the strategy would see the NEG begin in 2020.
